The purpose of the Mentor Program in Schools is to link a student with a volunteer adult in their local community who can act as a mentor. The role of the mentor is to encourage the student and help them build a trusting relationship with an adult, while assisting them to develop strong pathways to learning and work. With the help of a mentor, the student will develop self-esteem, trust and communication skills enabling them to gain direction for their future.
The Mentor Program is in its fourth year and has continued
to expand with increased demand for mentors coming from
a wider selection of schools. Mentors commit one hour a
week to meet with a young person during school time for
three terms of the school year. The mentors make a valuable
contribution by assisting young people to gain skills and
confidence by providing guidance and support enabling them
to make better informed decisions about their future career
and employment prospects. Mentors also provide young people
with valuable experience and understanding from an objective
viewpoint.
